Theme: Youth Leadership in Education

The program started with Ms. Karly Hou’s, Founder and Executive Director of The Wave Learning Festival, presentation on youth leadership in education. Ms. Hou shared her experiences leading Wave and suggested various programs that would enhance the leadership skills of our participants. After Ms. Hou’s presentation, students started the discussion portion of the program, moderated by the 2021 YLS Alumna, Ms. Alana Basmajian. Throughout the discussion, participants shared their unique leadership stories through their projects and listened to different cultural approaches to education related activism.

BIO

Alana is a high school senior living in Los Angeles, CA. She received the Congress-Bundestag Vocational Youth Exchange Scholarship in Germany where she will be attending next year. In college, she will be double majoring in Social Work and Social Administration and Global Studies with plans of working for the UN to combat youth sex trafficking and promote social justice. She is currently on the Youth Advisory Boards for the national organizations One Love and Teen Talk. She just returned from a trip to Washington D.C. where she advocated on behalf of One Love to legislators alongside her peers from across the U.S. Following her passion for youth based organizations, she is on the special events team for Wave Learning Festival and is a BAE Breaker for the national organization SafeBAE. Last summer she participated in the International Sister Cities Youth Summit and helped present on Globalizaing Mandatory Comprehensive Sex Education.

BIO

Karly Hou is the Founder and Executive Director of Wave Learning Festival, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit combating long-standing educational inequities exacerbated by the pandemic. Wave LF provides a 100% free, live, online, peer-to-peer learning platform and offers diverse seminars during the summer, 24/7 tutoring during the school year, college/career support, and more. In less than 2 years, they've served 15,000+ students and run 500+ courses and 5000+ hours of tutoring. Karly is also a junior at Harvard University studying Computer Science and Mathematics.
